Plant Structure

Mary, Mary how does your garden grow? With light, chlorophyll (green liquid), carbon dioxide and water all in a row. Alas, it does not quite have the same ring to it. This process is called photosynthesis and we will talk about it later in this section.

Firstly we will look at the basic structure of plants. The main parts of a flower are listed below. You must remember that not every plant contains every one of these.

·         Petals

·         Leaves

·         Stem

·         Roots

·         Root hairs

·         Nectary

Each of these parts has a use. The petals and nectary are used –by certain plants[i] – to attract insects. The leaves (in green plants[ii]) are used to trap sunlight to help make food. The stem is used to support the plant and to transport water from the roots along with other things. The roots take in water from the soil and the root hairs grow off the roots to make the total area bigger so as to get maximum water to the plant.

[i] Not all plants need to attract insects; some use the wind to get pollen.

[ii] Non-green plants don’t do the same thing.
