Photosynthesis: The Very Basics

 If you think about the word “photosynthesis” it can be split into two parts: “photo” meaning light and “synthesis” meaning production (making of). The process of photosynthesis is the production of food with light providing the energy. In order to show you photosynthesis we will start with the word equation:

 This means that a plant needs Water and Carbon Dioxide to produce food (in the form of a sugar called Glucose) and give off Oxygen which is a gas.     

The chlorophyll is a green pigment (coloured liquid) which is used to trap light. 

Glucose is a simple sugar which the plant can use for energy. The water comes from the soil - through the roots- and the carbon dioxide comes from the air through gaps (called pores) in the leaf.
